Hedging & Forestry

Hedging

Farm Relief has become the leading hedging contractor in Donegal, Monaghan and Northern Ireland. Farmers can avail of Farm Relief's professional hedging service since 1995.

Different Types of Farm Hedging

Farm Relief plant several types of hedges: from the standard hawthorn hedge to a magnificent copper beech or holly hedge. Prices are determined by the type of hedge, ground preparation, species mix and weed control systems required. When planting a hawthorn hedge, other plants are mixed in to create a more beautiful and interesting hedge such as beech, dog rose, blackthorn and holly.

Hedge Regeneration

Sometimes, hedges are overgrown, gappy or look like 'toilet brushes'. All these hedges can be improved and made stockproof if necessary by using techniques such as coppicing and laying. Our farm operators are fully trained and have extensive experience in this type of work. Hedges are really external fences.

Advantages of Hedges

Beside the better economical value of hedges (hedges are cheaper than fences long term), they also have other advantages such as disease control between farms. They provide shelter and shade for stock, a windbreak, firewood, permanence and last but not least their immense ecological value.
